Results & Roundup

On Saturday 22nd May, the children from Glengarry Shinty Club began their P5 & under Glen Albyn league campaign at Drumnadrochit, this age group was more suited to the Glengarry side, who with the addition of P7 David Rodgers, held their own in the P7 & under comp. to finish third overall against much older, bigger and experienced teams.

With P5 & under Player of the Year, Mungo Blakey, taking over Captaincy of the team, he led from example, with a positional shuffle, Mungo was moved from Defence to Midfield where he pushed the team forward to go all out for victory. Fergus Fraser taking Mungo's place in defence along side Stuart 'the Brick' MacArthur, who have formed a formidable defensive partnership, along with Lewis Dempster in goals.

With Megan Stewart assuming the half forward role and feeding the ball through to Grant 'Postie' MacCallum up front, the Garry were looking in great shape, P2 Cameron Bremner was replacing Megan throughout the games and it certainly looks like the Garry have found a real star for the future in that position, Cameron scoring, undoubtably, the goal of the tournament in our win against Glenurquhart.

In the first week on competition, the Garry Yellow's played 4 games, winning 3 and losing 1 to Balnain, who look fairly strong.
The Garry Green's also made their debut in the P5 & under league, slightly younger than the yellow's in that P2's Ronan Blakey and Rhian Dempster made impressive debuts in the Glen Albyn League. Ben Johnstone captained the Green's and also led by example with his team. Huge improvements from all the Green's with Captain Ben & Andrew Wilson really developing in to great players, who will be pushing their way in to the Yellow's squad soon.
The Green's were defeated in each of their games, but it is a massive learning curve for them and the game experience will add to their development.

After the tournament, the Invergarry Primary Children took part in a 4 mile sponsored walk to raise money for the Primary School, the picture attached shows a few of the children making a £50 donation from the Shinty Club to Mrs Strachan, Headmistress of IPS.

Valerie Fraser Womens Camanachd

Cup Final

Tir Conaill Harps and The Glengarry Girls met at Mossfield Park Oban for the Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup Final.

After a quiet opening 5 minutes the Glengarry Girls started to dictate play with their forwards going close on several occasions before youngster Laura Gallacher fired home from 5 yards in the 15th minute. Tir Conaill Harps responded but were finding it hard to get past the Glengarrry centre line and when they did the Glengarry defence was in top form, tackling hard for every ball. In the 23rd minute Lucy MacNulty broke free and from 15yards gave the Tir Conaill Harps keeper no chance to put the Garry Girls 2 – 0 up

                                      Half Time 2  -  0

The Glengarry Girls started of the 2nd half at a fast pace and were rewarded in the 40 minute when Annie Butterworth rounded two defenders and fired an unstoppable shot from 25yards into the net. Tir Conaill were battling hard but had no answer to Glengarry’s non stop running and strong tackling. In the 58th minute the Glengarry girls scored the best goal of the game when Lauren Docherty flicked the ball over her head and marker picked it up and dribbled past another defender flicked the ball into Laura Gallacher who gave the keeper no chance from 18yards. There was no let up for Tir Conaill Harps who were finding it difficult to mount any attacks of their own as the Glengarry Girls closed them down as soon as they got possession. In the 69th minute Helen Nelson dribbled past several defenders and rounded the keeper to put the Glengarry Girls 5 – 0 up

                                     Full time 5  -  0

Peter Gow, sponser of the cup, presented Joanne Gillanders, the Glengarry captain with the cup and the captains black caman. This was the 5th time Glengarry have won the cup in the 9 years it has been played for, indeed they have only missed being in the final once. This was an excellent team display with everyone playing their part in a well deserved win.
